OSHOALA FIRES NIGERIA TO U20 WORLD CUP FINAL

Oshoala struck four times against North Korea Wednesday for Nigeria to reach the final of the 2014 FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada.

The outstanding Oshoala hit target in the 24th, 60th, 68th and 85th minutes to crown an awesome day in the office as the Falconets trounced North Korea 6-2.

This weekend in Montreal they will now meet the winners of the other semi-final between Germany and France.

The Falconets aimed for an early goal to unsettle their opponents and they only had to wait for two minutes before Courtney Dike struck.

Oshoala doubled Nigeria lead on 24 minutes, before Korea pulled a goal back R.Un Sim in the 31stminute.

However, towering striker Uchechi Sunday came off the bench to increase the Nigeria lead when she finished off a fine pullout from the right in the 55th minute.

After Oshoala got her second goal on the hour, Korea scored from the penalty spot after Njoku handled the ball inside her box.

But therafter it was the Oshoala show as she plundered two more goals including a spectacular long-range effort to take Nigeria to a second U20 World Cup final in four years.

Rivers State APC/PDP crisis: Traditional Ruler shoots son, 5 others inPort Harcourt

Bloody clash was yesterday, averted by the police, as violence erupted in a Rumuepirikom Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where a reportedly (dethroned) traditional ruler HRH Eze Tony O.allegedly shot his own son and six others for not joining the APC bandwagon.

The planned tour by the Rivers State Governor,  Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, of Rumueprikom community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, home of Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, was yesterday aborted as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed.

At the end of the fracas, which broke out early yesterday at the Wimpey Junction, Ikwerre Road, section of the community, no fewer than eight people were reportedly wounded.

It was gathered that Amaechi was scheduled to visit Rumuprikom yesterday in continuation of his meet-the-people tour of the 23 local government areas in the state which began on July 15.

Sources said youths had gathered at the Wimpey junction playing drums in anticipation of Amaechi’s visit to the area when shots rang out of the Traditional Ruler single-barrel gun.

However, while some people said it was a clash between members of the APC and PDP over the governor’s visit, other said the HRH  had fixed a traditional festival which usually held on August 13 every year to coincide with Amaechi’ visit to give the impression that a large crowd turned out to receive the governor.

The sporadic shooting from the palace of the traditional ruler caused pandemonium with the people around scampering for safety.

Clement, who was said to have seven bullets buried in his body reportedly said, at the hospital where he was taken for treatment, that, “We had a family meeting. We saw the APC group; they damaged my brother’s (Evidence) car and my father shot me because I didn’t join APC. I don’t know if it is by force that I join a political party of his choice.

“My father shot me because I refused to join the APC. My father is angry that I and my brothers have refused join the APC. We have told him repeatedly that we have the right to join the party of our choice.”

Irate youths that attempted to storm the Traditional Ruler's  residence were prevailed upon by a reinforcement of policemen that arrived at the scene to prevent the youths from attacking the Eze's Palace and destroying property.

The Commissioner of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin, who confirmed the incident, affirmed that the Monarch  shot his son and six people.

He said: “Chief Anthony O. was arrested after he shot six  people and his son. He was arrested along with four others whose identities are yet to be confirmed. The chief has volunteered useful information to the police and we have successfully recovered a single-barrel gun with expended cartridges, pellets and live ammunition from the aforementioned chief.”

Ogunsakin who disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation “issued a stern warning to political jobbers who engage in campaigns and political meetings aimed at wreaking havoc on the populace of the state to desist forthwith.”

The commissioner of police further warned: “The Rivers State Police Command is using this medium to sound a note of warning to various groups, public office holders, and corporate organisations to desist from carrying out activities that will disrupt the peace and tranquility enjoyed in the state.”

Reacting to the incident, Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha, accused Wike of “sponsoring political thugs and militants to disrupt Amaechi’s visit to Rumuprikom in continuation of his local government tour.”
According to Okocha, “We were informed yesterday that political thugs were planning to disrupt the governor’s visit to Rumuprikom, so the governor called the commissioner of police and informed him of the security report. The commissioner then assured the governor that he will send more men to Rumuprikom before the arrival of the governor.

“But unknown to our political adversaries, the governor had called off the scheduled visit because of the sudden death of the Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Port Harcourt local government council, Charles Boms, who died this morning (yesterday).”

Also reacting on the incident, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, also condemned the incident and expressed regret that politicians who recruit political thugs to kill and maim their opponents “don’t bring out their children to join in street fights or perpetuate violence.

“The PDP should work towards getting supporters rather than hiring hoodlums and miscreants to disrupt the governor’s tour of local governments in the state. The PDP should try and rise above politics of violence and destruction of property,” she advised.

It was also gathered that,At the end of the fracas, two sons of the  traditional ruler and five others were lying  critically ill in the hospital.
It was gathered that the first son, Ndidi, allegedly shot by the monarch, had seven bullets in his body. The second son, Endurance, whose Toyota Camry car was destroyed, had a machete cut on his head. The palace of the monarch was also torched by angry youths.
When NijaTV Germany Port Harcourt correspondent visited the scene, no fewer than twenty police vehicles with armed anti-riot policemen, were positioned at strategic places.
At the centre of the crisis were the allegedly dethroned traditional ruler of the community and staunch supporter of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, and members of the community.
It was alleged that the violence was orchestrated by supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But one of the community youths, simply identified as Melchizedek, who spoke with NijaTV Germany, ruled out any political undertone in the mayhem.
He alleged that the reportedly dethroned monarch had imported some hoodlums to disrupt their annual cultural festival,  billed to hold yesterday in the state capital.
Incidentally, according to the source, the monarch, who still regards himself as the authentic king of the community, fixed a town hall meeting, where Governor Amaechi would be the guest of honour.
Melchizedek said: “The community does not recognise him as a traditional ruler and we wonder why anybody would fix another programme within the period of the festival.
“Meanwhile, the canopies we put here the previous night, for the festival were destroyed. And these ones were fixed this morning.”

National Conference 2014 officially ends, Delegates Adopt Final Report.

It was a happy end to an uncertain journey on Thursday when the plenary session and indeed the 2014 National Conference drew to a close amidst fanfare laced with solidarity songs.

Suddenly, media hypes regarding apprehensions arising from issues contained in the three volumes of the prepared reports melted into oblivion as delegates unanimously approved the reports.

A scenario of unsolicited hugs, multiple pats on the back, wide smiles, handshakes unhindered by ethnic divides unfolded naturally as the unanimous adoption of the reports was taken.

Conference Chairman and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, GCON; Deputy chairman and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi; Conference Secretary, Dr (Mrs) Valerie-Jenette Azinge and the three assistant secretaries savoured the atmosphere with joy.

Shortly after the adoption of Votes and Proceedings of the previous day, the session opened with a “motion to mandate the secretariat to vet and effect amendment” to the three reports prepared by the secretariat.

Here is the full text of the motion sponsored by High Chief Jerry Okwuonu and former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili:

“Whereas the secretariat has done a very marvelous job of compiling the report of the Conference and presenting same to us in easily readable and cross-checkable format; and

“Whereas delegates have perused all the reports and submitted in writing all items of omission or incorrect addition to the final report; and

Bearing in mind the dual necessity of bringing the conference to a close for purposes of not unduly over-reaching the logistics provision of the conference and not unnecessarily prolonging the continued conglomeration of people in contradiction to the prescription of Health Authorities especially as the country tackles the Ebola crisis.

“It is hereby moved that the secretariat be mandated to vet all the written submission by delegates and make necessary correction thereby providing the final draft of the Conference reports”

Another motion to slightly amend the earlier motion was taken for a change in the nomenclature of one of the volumes of the reports from Draft Constitution to Proposed Amendments to the 1999 Constitution was moved by another delegate Adamu Maina Waziri. Here is a full text of his motion:

“To cultivate a conducive environment for delegates to validate and adopt the final report of the Conference, we the undersigned delegates, hereby offer and endorse the following observations and recommendation that seek to facilitate the process and lead to amicable ending of the Conference proceedings.

“We note that the Secretariat of the Conference on August 11, 2014 tabled before delegates a draft report contained in three volumes that are broken down in seven chapters

“In particular, we observed that volume III titled Draft Constitution, conveys an attempt to insert various resolutions and recommendations of a constitutional nature that were adopted by the Conference as proposed amendments to the appropriate sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

“We recall and welcome the clarification and confirmation offered by Conference Chairman at plenary on August 13, 2014 that indeed Volume III contains proposals for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

“We urged the leadership of the Conference, in collating the final report, to more appropriately designate Volume 111 as: Draft Proposals to Amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

“Furthermore, we note and welcome the amenability of the Conference Secretariat to entertain suggestions from the delegates that point out any specific error to misrepresentation of decisions taken or resolutions adopted by the Conference and/or any inadvertent failure to incorporate same in the draft report.

“We are aware that delegates have responded to this call and submitted to the Secretariat their various observations and suggested amendments to the draft.

“In preparing the final report, we urged the Conference Secretariat to keep faith with and reflect fully and accurately all resolutions and recommendations accepted by the Conference and as contained in votes and preceding that were formally adopted.

“Subject to the acceptance of the foregoing understanding, assurances and conditions and in accordance with the Procedure Rules, 2014 of the Conference, we move for the validation and adoption of the draft reports contained in volume 1,2 and 3 without further debate.

“In the spirit of the consensus building cultivated by members and to maintain the bridges built during the currency of the Conference, we urge all delegates to subscribe to this plea.”

The two motions when put to voice vote separately by the Chairman received a unanimous acceptance by the delegates.

Spontaneously, all the delegates stood up and enthusiastically sang the old National Anthem “Nigeria We Hail Thee”.

The chairman then called on Chief Richard Akinjide to formally move a motion for the adoption of the final Conference Report. Chief Akinjide while moving the motion recalled his days in parliament before Nigeria gained independence and also after independence and noted that it was an honour to be called upon to move a motion for the adoption of the final report of a “very successful conference”. The youngest delegate to the Conference, 24-year old Miss Yadoma Bukar Mandara, seconded the motion.

Shortly after, delgates took turns to pour encomium on the leadership of the Conference for their maturity in steering the conference proceedings. Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah gave a very moving vote of thanks which received spontaneous applause from delegates. A delegate representing the South South, Hon. Orok Otu Duke, read out a farewell poem titled “How Can We Say Farewell” to the delegates.

After adoption of Votes and Proceedings for the day based on a motion by Iyom Josephine Anenih and seconded by Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, Justice Kutigi called on the Lamido Adamawa, Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha to move a motion for the closure of the Conference.

Chief Mike Ahamba who seconded the motion said Thursday was a day of pride and honour because “when we came here, nobody expected us to end this way…We have disappointed the skeptics.”

With that comment, the 2014 National Conference inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on March 17, 2014 came to a close.

Boko Haram Appoint New Emir For Captured Gwoza Town, Women Bury Their Dead

With most of their menfolk killed or on the run, women in the town of Gwoza, Borno State, have taken on the grim task of burying dozens of residents massacred in last week’s assault by insurgents belonging to the Islamist group, Boko Haram.

In telephone interviews, two sources in the town said the women of Gwoza were burying men, women and children who lost their lives when a vicious band of Boko Haram fighters descended on the town last week in an orgy of death and destruction.

“We are very fatigued,” one of the women told our correspondent. She added, “We are almost resigned to fate in our tedious and unusual work of burying scores of dead bodies that still litter our town.”

Another female source said it became necessary for them to bury the dead because “the men in our town and surrounding towns have either been slaughtered or have fled for fear of being killed.”

The source said the town was now peopled by trapped women, little children and the elderly who were spared by the Boko Haram fighters.

The insurgents have seized the Emir’s residence as well as a government lodge in Gwoza, and have appointed a replacement for the town’s fleeing Emir. Our sources added that Boko Haram’s black flags have been hoisted at different locations in the town as a mark of the sect’s authority.

A source also stated that the sect had introduced strict Islamic laws in the seized emirate.

A soldier involved in a counter-insurgency operation corroborated the accounts of the situation in Gwoza. He said some women and youths who arrived in Madagali, Adamawa State, after fleeing Gwoza and traveling through the rough terrain of hills painted terrifying portraits for military officials who interviewed them.

A senior military officer told newsmen that the Nigerian Army was drawing up a strategic plan to execute “a multi-dimensional offensive in a bid to dislodge Boko Haram from Gwoza and surrounding villages.”

Keshi recieves New Contract from NFF for assent

The executive board of the Nigeria Football Federation in a meeting on Tuesday in Abuja renewed the contract of the Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after the meeting, the Chairman of the NFF communiqué committee and board member, Emeka Inyama, said the board has finalized preparation of the contract. “Having finalized the fresh contract with Mr. Stephen Keshi, for him to continue as Head Coach of Super Eagles, and having forwarded same to Mr. Keshi, the Executive Committee expects the new contract to be signed by the NFF and Mr. Keshi in a matter of days” he said Keshi’s previous contract expired after the Brazil 2014 World Cup. He was being paid N5 million a month with an official car and accommodation. The coach had asked for a pay raise to N10 million.

However, Mr. Inyama refused to disclose the details of the proposed contract sent to the coach for assent.

Emir of Gwoza Reportedly Rescued In Borno, His Wife Killed

The Islamist terrorists invaded Gwoza town last week and had seized a number of residents as hostages, according to a source. According to the source, the emir and a few other hostages were able to escape in a heavy downpour of rain.

A security source has told SaharaReporters that Muhammadu Timta, the emir of the besieged town of Gwoza in Borno State, had been rescued from the Gwoza Hills where he fled from insurgents belonging to the Islamist group, Boko Haram.

The Islamist terrorists invaded Gwoza town last week and had seized a number of residents as hostages, according to a source. According to the source, the emir and a few other hostages were able to escape in a heavy downpour of rain.

The same source said that the fleeing emir’s wife was not so fortunate as members of Boko Haram identified her and reportedly murdered her.

In a report shortly after Boko Haram fighters sacked Gwoza and killed scores of residents last week, SaharaReporters had disclosed that the emir’s whereabouts were unknown. But our source said the traditional ruler of the embattled town remained incommunicado because he fled with numerous other hostages to the surrounding hilly terrains around Gwoza.

“The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Muhammadu Timta, was declared missing because we did not have any news about him for the first few days after the Boko Haram attack. But he later showed up after escaping through the mountains,” said our source. He added, “the emir is now in Yola but will soon be on his way to Abuja for medical treatment. His wife was killed by members of the [Boko Haram] sect once they identified who she was.”

Mr. Timta was crowned the emir after Boko Haram insurgents ambushed his late father and then emir, Idrisa Timta, in late May, 2014.

Ekiti State Anti Smoking Law- smokers to pay N250,000 fine or six-month jail

Ekiti State Government on Monday signed the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2014, to begin the enforcement of the law.

The signing ceremony took place during public presentation of the rules regulations on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Eniola Ajayi.

It was in collaboration with the New Initiative for Social Development and Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids.

She said, “The rules are designed to ensure full enforcement of the spirit and letters of the law.

“If the area designated for smoking is to be within an enclosed building or a partially enclosed place on any premises, only one such smoking area may be designated.”

The law was enacted by the House of Assembly and assented to by Governor Kayode Fayemi in March 2012.

It restricted smoking to designated areas in an outdoor or open space.

It imposes a fine ranging between N10,000 and N250,000 on offenders, or imprisonment for a term of three to six months, or both.

Ajayi said, “It is important to stress again that the laws, and indeed, the rules are not designed to punish the smokers.

“Rather, they are necessary for the protection of the non-smokers who may be affected by the fumes and diseases caused by second-hand smoke.

“Diseases such as brain tumour, middle ear disease, asthma, leukemia, cancel, madden infant death and so on. These are non-communicable and avoidable diseases, which are predominantly caused by tobacco smoke.”
