President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed Mr. Suleiman Abba, as the 17th Inspector General of Police (IGP), following the retirement of the incumbent, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, who served mandatory 35 years in service.Abba is the current Assistant Inspector General of Police in Zone 7, would take over the seat on Thursday and his appointment would force out many Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) who are his senior in rank.
The Presidency confirmed this in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Reuben Abati.
President Goodluck Jonathan also held a meeting with the new Inspector-General of Police who replaces the incumbent Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, who is retiring, having completed 35 years in service.
The new Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, was seen in the Presidential Villa led by the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar after the Council of State meeting on Thursday.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, the outgoing Inspector-General of Police thanked the President and Nigerians for giving him the opportunity to serve.
The new Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger states.
Suleiman Abba, a lawyer, hails from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
Positions previously held by him in the Police include Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command, Deputy Force Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.
His appointment is with effect from Friday, August 1, 2014The appointment of Abba was reported been on the recommendation of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Abba was a former Aide-de-Camp to a former First Lady, Mrs. Maryam Abacha.
